The 8237-1246 is a configurable overspeed detection system designed to safely shut down steam, gas and water turbines of all sizes when an overspeed or superacceleration event is sensed. Available with two dual redundant tripping relay outputs in a two-thirds voting architecture or three separate non-voting tripping relay outputs with separate alarm relays at 4-20 mA speeds
Acceleration detection
In addition, the 8237-1246 can be configured to protect the turbine from high acceleration events. The derivative of the speed signal is used to detect the turbine acceleration and issue the relevant trip command.
MPU detection
Each module’s speed sensor input uses a special MPU open detection circuit to verify that the MPU is properly connected prior to turbine operation, and a special speed loss detection logic to verify MPU function during turbine operation.
Automatic overspeed test program
Alternatively, ProTech-GII can be configured to perform routine overspeed tests on each module and then record and report the test results. In this test routine, each module completes its test sequence using an internal frequency generator to simulate overspeed conditions.
