The MVME214 is a VME bus industrial-grade single-board computer produced by MOTOROLA
A single-board Computer (SBC) is a complete computer built on a Single circuit board with a microprocessor, memory, input/output (I/O), and other features required for a functional computer.
The MVME214 single board computer is manufactured as a demonstration or development system, for use in educational systems or as an embedded computer controller. Many types of home computers or portable computers integrate all of their functions onto a single printed circuit board. Unlike desktop personal computers, single-board computers generally do not rely on expansion slots for peripheral functionality or expansion. The MVME214 single-board computer is built using a variety of microprocessors. Simple designs, such as those built by computer enthusiasts, typically use static RAM and low-cost 8 – or 16-bit processors. Other types, such as blade servers, perform similarly to server computers, but in a more compact format.
MVME214 adopts PowerPC processor, which has high performance and reliability, and is often used in industrial control, communication, data processing and other fields. It supports the VME bus standard, has a wealth of peripheral interfaces, including serial port, parallel port, network port, etc., and has high scalability, convenient for function expansion and upgrade.
MVME214 is now commonly integrated into motherboards, and PCI and PCI-X are sometimes referred to as parallel PCI or traditional PCI[8] to technically differentiate them from their recent successor, PCI Express, which employs a continuous, lane-based architecture. The heyday of 9PCI in the desktop computer market was approximately 1995 to 2005. [9]PCI and PCI-X are in most cases obsolete; However, in 2020, they will still be common on modern desktops for backward compatibility and relatively low production costs. Another common modern application of parallel PCI is that many dedicated expansion cards used here in industrial computers never made the transition to PCI Express, just like some ISA cards. Many types of devices that were previously available on PCI expansion cards are now commonly integrated onto motherboards, or available in USB and PCI Express versions.
